Skin-lightening creams: the hidden danger
Many "fairness" creams contain mercury or steroids. They damage skin for years.
What's often inside
-
Mercury
Banned in cosmetics in most countries, still found in unlabelled creams. It poisons the kidneys and nerves.
Strong evidence -
Strong steroids (clobetasol, betamethasone)
They thin skin, cause stretch marks, acne and permanent darkening when stopped.
Strong evidence -
High-strength hydroquinone without a doctor
Long use can cause ochronosis: blue-black patches that are very hard to treat.

Warning signs
-
Fast, dramatic lightening
Real mark-fading takes 8–12 weeks. Anything faster is usually a steroid.
-
No ingredient list or a vague one
Unlabelled or "herbal secret formula" creams are the most likely to be contaminated.
-
Skin that gets worse when you stop
Rebound darkening and spots after stopping are classic steroid withdrawal. See a doctor.

What fades marks safely
-
Daily sunscreen first
Without it, nothing else works: sun re-darkens marks within hours.
Strong evidence -
Azelaic acid, niacinamide, vitamin C
Gentle, proven mark-faders that are safe on deeper skin tones.
Strong evidence -
Treat the cause
Fewer breakouts and no picking means fewer new marks.
